There is power in belief

I heard this phrase last night and it is true. Most of the really difficult things that have been accomplished have been accomplished by people with a strong belief in what they were doing. For good or ill, belief matters.

An illustration: a doctor friend was working in the ER when the owner of a nearby bar came in complaining of heartburn. He just wanted something to fix it. My friend ran some tests and wanted him to be admitted to the hospital. The man just kept resisting, sure that he just had heartburn. Finally, the doctor said to him, "Look, you're having a heart attack!" With that, the man dropped dead on the floor. The power of belief! Of course he was revived and later was fine.

Columbus believed that the earth was round. Martin Luther King believed that all men are created equal. Winston Churchill believed England could win the war. Each prevailed because they believed. What belief do you have that is strong enough to overcome all?

Martin Luther King

I heard a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, which he gave in 1963. He was speaking of the guidelines of the Church. The first was to heal the broken hearted, who suffer from spiritual exhaustion. He noted that failure is a fact of life. Good Friday is a fact of life. We need to say to ourselves, "This is my grief and I must bear it." But he went on to say that God doesn't say you'll escape but with faith you will have an inner peace. "I will give you rest."

Below is the link to the commitment that civil rights workers had to sign. If you are committed to uniting people in love, you would do well to consider whether you would sign this commitment now. No good work, godly work will be accomplished without discipline and dedication. This is sort of an examination of conscience.

Choosing Suffering

They [the Apostles] are in a community of love, in a community of formation, but also—they feel this, and so they are afraid—in a community of suffering. How hard it is to chose to suffer especially when it seems unjust. In order to prove your love it must be tested in the fire of trials. Do not shrink from the test, but as St. Paul says, run so as to win the victor's crown. Fear not!

Introduction of the OIL which heals

I am concerned with the way the world is going and I have been prompted to do what I can to help folks of every sort realize that even if we differ in sex, family, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, politics or any other way, we can nevertheless, with love, get along with one another and work together to solve our problems.

I see this blog as sort of a Reader's Digest of positive, encouraging quotes, prayers, scriptures, which I hope will begin to provide an OIL of lubrication to aid communication, defuse anger, and soothe fears. We are all people but we can chose to focus on our similarity instead of our differences. Let's do that!
